ATKINS
DIET?
NOT REALLY "LOW" CARB
Whatever
you read about the "low carb" dieting
fad, be aware that the Atkins diet is not a low
carb diet but a carbohdyrate deprivation diet.
Atkins advocated eating so few carbs that the
body goes into "ketosis" - an emergency
state which causes a lot of water loss and a
lessening of appetite but actually interferes
with the metabolism of fat for energy.
Eating
low carbs is effective for weight loss because
it reduces calories, which any diet designed
to reduce body fat must do. But nobody should confuse
the Atkins carbohydrate deprivation diet with one
that simply involves lowering caloric intake by
restricting carbohydrate intake.
Actually,
if you want an effective diet that includes high
levels of protein and restriction of carbs, your
best bet is the bodybuilding diet - after
all, bodybuilders are the most successful dieters
in the world. Even a "failed" bodybuilding
diet in terms of competition is a huge success
by any ordinary standard.
